Today we visited the final resting place of Benjamin Orr (1947–2000), the legendary rock musician and co-founder of The Cars, whose voice and bass lines defined a generation of new wave rock. Born Benjamin Orzechowski, he rose to fame in 1976 alongside Ric Ocasek in Boston, Massachusetts, helping create a band that would become one of the most influential in rock history. As the bassist and lead vocalist, Orr delivered iconic performances on hits such as “Just What I Needed,” “Let’s Go,” “Candy-O,” and the chart-topping “Drive.” His solo work, including the hit “Stay the Night,” further showcased his talent and versatility.
In his later years, Orr formed the band Big People in Atlanta, collaborating with musicians from other classic rock legends. Even after being diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in May 2000, he continued performing until September 27th of that year, demonstrating his dedication and passion for music.
In 2018, Benjamin Orr was posthumously honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Cars, cementing his legacy as a defining voice of rock music. Visiting his grave reminds us of the energy, talent, and soul he brought to every performance, and the lasting impact of his music continues to inspire fans around the world.
