A man in Italy, troubled by persistent itching and red welts on his skin, initially suspected a bed bug infestation. However, upon closer inspection by an expert, the true cause of his discomfort was revealed to be something entirely different.
The expert discovered that the man had been unknowingly hosting a colony of parasitic insects beneath his skin. These insects, known as Dermatobia hominis, or human botflies, lay their eggs on the skin of a host. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the skin, causing irritation and the formation of welts. This condition, known as myiasis, is rare but not unheard of in certain regions.
The discovery was both shocking and unsettling, as the man had been unaware of the infestation. The expert’s reaction was one of surprise and concern, emphasizing the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment in such cases.
